Couples counseling in the Bay Area wasn't something you ever thought you'd need — and yet here we are.

You’ve built a life together, a home, maybe a family, a future you planned side by side. But something has shifted. The connection that used to come easily now takes too much effort you don’t seem to have anymore. You’re not looking for someone to take sides. You just want to feel close again.

// REAL CLIENT EXPERIENCE

You are not the only person who’s felt this way.

“Couples therapy helped us communicate in a completely different way. We weren’t having the same arguments over and over anymore, and for the first time in a long time, we felt like we were actually on the same team.”

- J.M. & S.K., Pleasanton CA
Individual results vary, but meaningful change is possible with the right support.

What it feels like to work together

You don’t need to arrive with a rehearsed explanation of everything that’s gone wrong. Most couples come in not even sure where to start. That’s normal.

In EFT-based couples counseling at our Bay Area practice, we slow down the negative cycle of pursue and withdraw, attack and shut down, that plays out over and over. You’ll start to understand what’s underneath it: the unspoken fear, the unmet need that neither of you has been able to name.

From there, we work on rebuilding emotional safety and creating moments of real connection, not just conflict management. Over time, the tone of your relationship shifts. Not because you got lucky, but because you both understand the system now and know how to work with it.

Getting started is simpler than you think

You don’t have to have it all figured out. To start couples therapy in the Bay Area, all you need to do is take one small step.

You reach out

A short form, a text, or an email. Done in under 2 minutes.

We have a free 10-minute call

We connect, you ask questions, we figure out together if it's the right fit. Zero commitment, zero pressure.

You start to feel like yourself again

Slowly, the noise gets quieter. The tension loosens. Over time, you get your energy — and yourself — back.

IF THERAPY HASN'T WORKED BEFORE, HERE'S WHY THIS IS DIFFERENT

What it feels like to work together

Finally understand what's happening in your body

Anxiety isn't a personality flaw or a mindset issue. You'll learn exactly why your nervous system responds the way it does — and why that's been so hard to just "think" your way out of.

A structured approach, not just a listening ear

Sessions follow a clear framework. You'll always know what we're working on and why — no more leaving therapy wondering what the point was.

See the beliefs that have been running the show

You'll learn to catch the thoughts that keep the anxiety loop going and build real skills to interrupt them before they spiral.

Face what's been avoiding you — at your own pace

Through gradual, supported exposure work, you'll move through the things that have been keeping you small — one manageable step at a time.

Leave with tools you'll actually use

Not just insight, but a real toolkit. Strategies you can use in the car, at your desk, at 2am — wherever anxiety shows up.

// QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE.

You might be wondering…

In practice, couples counseling and marriage counseling in the Bay Area refer to the same thing – structured sessions where both partners work with a licensed therapist to improve communication, resolve conflict, and rebuild connection. The term “marriage counseling” tends to come up more when couples are dealing with serious or long-standing issues, while “couples counseling” is used more broadly for any stage of a relationship. At BalanceHour, we work with both married and unmarried couples across the Bay Area, Pleasanton, San Ramon, and California statewide.

Most couples in Dublin see meaningful progress within 8–20 sessions, though this varies depending on the complexity of what you’re working through. Some couples come in for a focused 8–10 session reset around a specific issue. Others work with us over 6–12 months to address deeper patterns. We’ll give you a realistic sense of timeline in your first session and there’s no pressure to commit to an open-ended process.

This is more common than most people think. A reluctant partner doesn’t mean therapy won’t work, rather it often just means one person got there first. A few things that help: framing it as “we need a neutral space” rather than “you need to change,” starting with a single session to see how it feels, or having your partner speak directly with Dr. Tim on the free 10-minute call before committing. If your partner remains unwilling, individual therapy with a couples-informed therapist in Dublin can still create meaningful change in the relationship dynamic.

Yes and this is actually one of the most valuable times to come in. Couples counseling doesn’t exist only to save a relationship. It can help you and your partner make a clearer, more intentional decision about what comes next, whether that’s rebuilding or separating with less pain and conflict. If separation does become the path forward, we can transition into separation counseling to help both partners navigate that process with more clarity and less damage, especially when children are involved.

We are a private pay practice, which means we don’t bill insurance directly. Session fees are discussed during your free 10-minute call so you have full transparency before committing to anything. We do provide superbills — a receipt you can submit directly to your insurance provider for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many clients are reimbursed a meaningful portion of their session cost this way.

We offer reduced session rates for active and veteran military, first responders, and medical staff. If this applies to you, simply mention it during your free consultation call and we’ll discuss what’s available.
